Segus Jolivette

Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette

End of Watch: July 25, 2024

Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette was shot and killed during a hostage barricade in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard in Jeanerette. Lafayette Police Department personnel were assisting the Jeanerette Police Department after a Deputy Marshal with the Jeanerette Marshal's Office attempted to serve a warrant on a convicted felon, but the subject barricaded himself along with two people inside the trailer.

Once officers entered the home, they were met with gunfire. Senior Corporal Jolivette was struck by the gunfire and died from his wounds. Three other officers were injured with non-life-threatening injuries. The subject was taken into custody.

Senior Corporal Jolivette had served with the Lafayette Police Department for 11 years and previously served with the Opelousas Police Department. He was an esteemed member of the SWAT negotiator team, he excelled as an active patrol officer, and previously served as a school resource officer. His commitment extended beyond daily duties, as he was a respected former juvenile detective and an active member of the honor guard. Senior Corporal Jolivette  dedicated much of his free time supporting the explorer program, helping Lafayette’s youth to gain a better understanding of law enforcement operations and the importance of relationship building in our community. His legacy of bravery and dedication will be remembered and honored by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife and five children.

Tracy Morgan

Sergeant Tracy Morgan

End of Watch: January 10, 2017

On January 10, 2017, 51-year-old Sergeant Tracy Morgan was at work at the Capital One building in Lake Charles. Shortly after 1:00 p.m., Sergeant Morgan collapsed as he walked from the parking garage to the main building. Troopers and medical personnel working in the building administered CPR until Acadian Ambulance arrived. Despite the best efforts of those who came to his aid, Sergeant Morgan was pronounced dead at CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital.
Sergeant Morgan proudly served our country as a U.S. Marine and served as a Lake Charles City Police Officer before becoming a Trooper in 1994. Sergeant Morgan had extensive investigative experience and served as a crisis negotiator.
“He epitomized what it meant to be a Trooper,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, Louisiana State Police Superintendent. “He will be missed by us all.”

Brad Garafola

Deputy Sheriff Brad Garafola, Corporal Montrell Jackson, and Police Officer Matthew Gerald, both of the Baton Rouge Police Department, were shot and killed by a subject outside of a convenience store at 9611 Airline Highway shortly before 9:00 am.

Officers had received reports of a subject walking along the roadway carrying a rifle. As responding officers arrived in the area they were ambushed by the subject. Deputy Garafola, Corporal Jackson, and Officer Gerald were killed and three other officers were wounded, including one who was critically wounded. The subject was shot and killed by other responding officers.

Deputy Garafola had served with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office for 24 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Matthew Gerald

Police Officer Matthew Gerald, Corporal Montrell Jackson, and Deputy Sheriff Brad Garafola, of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, were shot and killed by a subject outside of a convenience store at 9611 Airline Highway shortly before 9:00 am.

Officers had received reports of a subject walking along the roadway carrying a rifle. As responding officers arrived in the area they were ambushed by the subject. Deputy Garafola, Corporal Jackson, and Officer Gerald were killed and three other officers were wounded, including one who was critically wounded. The subject was shot and killed by other responding officers.

Officer Gerald was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Baton Rouge Police Department for less than one year.
